The Needle Exchange

SCCNEP is a program of Santa Cruz AIDS Project. The needle exchange in Santa Cruz has been in operation since 1988 and has received international acclaim. We have a variety of specialized programs, such as Women’s Only Exchange, home visits, street outreach and a peer-based, Satellite Syringe Exchange (SSE) Program.
SCCNEP provides syringe exchange services in a variety of times and locations. We offer exchange every day of the week at the HIV Resource Drop-In Center. We offer exchange at a variety of convenient locations from Watsonville to San Lorenzo Valley. Please see the schedule below for a schedule and instructions on how to schedule a home visit.
SCCNEP is central to the health of Santa Cruz County. Our services have kept HIV rates low among our program participants, their sexual partners and their children. In addition, we provide a valuable service to the community as a whole, by collecting used syringes and disposing of them safely. We believe that everyone has the right to the materials and information necessary to maintain good health, whether they inject drugs, steroids, vitamins, hormones or chose to abstain from injecting substances altogether.
SCCNEP’s services are free, confidential and anonymous. Our workers are specially trained to provide skilled, risk reduction counseling which includes healthcare and social service referrals. We treat our program participants with dignity and respect. We do not try to force any behavior changes upon our program participants; instead, we work to empower individuals to improve their health and the health of their communities. Due to the trust that this fosters, our workers are often successful at helping our program participants get into drug rehabilitation treatment.
